- ShadowmeldInstant, 10 sec cooldown. Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Using this ability in combat discourages enemies from attacking you, but increases the cooldown to 2 min.
QuicknessDodge chance increased by 1% and movement speed increased by 2%. Night Elf Rogues and Druids are harder to detect in Stealth as if they were 1 level higher.
Wisp SpiritTransform into a wisp upon death, increasing movement speed by 75%.
Elune's LightInstant, 3 min cooldown. Increases your critical strike chance with all spells and attacks by 10% for 15 sec.

How to play it
- Stealth, Ambush, Sinister Strike or Ghostly Strike, Eviscerate. Leave if the camp has three casters.
- Do not force Rupture on a mob that dies in four seconds. The order takes Hemorrhage before the capstone for that reason.
- Sprint is the travel tool until you have camps memorized. Icy Veins is right that it is one of the few early mobility cooldowns.
- First Aid. Subtlety does not heal you.
- At 60 you are a Hemorrhage rogue, not a Combat rogue who dipped Subtlety. The order never spends a Combat point.
Verdict
Subtlety is the opener. Premeditation adds 2 combo points from stealth. Hemorrhage is the builder that also makes the target take 15% more Rupture damage, and it hits harder with a dagger. Preparation resets your other cooldowns. Thousand Cuts, the capstone, makes Rupture ticks cheapen the next Hemorrhage or Backstab, stacking to 5.
Dirty Deeds cuts Cheap Shot and Garrote by 20 energy and lets Garrote land from the front. That is the battleground change. You no longer lose the opener because the flag carrier turned around.
wowforever.co puts Subtlety at B on MMOExp and Overgear and at C on the forum list. Icy Veins’ Assassination page is clear that low-level Rogue specs feel the same. Subtlety pulls ahead when Preparation and Hemorrhage exist, which is not level 20. The 51-point builds are projections.
Play Subtlety to open, control and reset. Play Combat if the fight never lets you restealth. Do not bring Subtlety as the raid DPS plan until someone parses it.
Strengths
- Preparation finishes the cooldown on your other abilities. A second Cheap Shot, a second Vanish, a second Blind.
- Hemorrhage plus Serrated Blades ignores 9% armor and adds 30% Rupture damage before the debuff even applies.
- Elusiveness cuts Vanish and Blind by 90 seconds. That is the reset spec.
- Master of Deception and Heightened Senses are stealth offense and stealth detection in the same tree.
Weaknesses
- If you cannot restealth, you are a worse Combat rogue. Ghostly Strike does not replace Blade Flurry.
- Thousand Cuts wants Rupture rolling. A target that dies in a stun never pays for the capstone.
- Public lists do not put Subtlety in S. The forum list has it at C.
- Early levels lack Sap and Blind. Icy Veins says that about Rogue in general, and Subtlety feels it most.
