Beta snapshot · build 1.60.1.70124 · level cap 30 · L60 conclusions are projections until launch

Shadow Priest

Ranged DPS

Shadowform, Mind Flay and a personal Shadow Weaving: the cloth DoT caster.

Verified 2026-10-01
Build 1.60.1.70124

Spirit Tap into Shadowform

ProjectionTheory

Wand Specialization and Spirit Tap first, because that is the mana loop every priest guide describes for solo play. Shadow Focus and Mind Flay come next. Shadowform is the payoff, taken as soon as the row gate and Vampiric Embrace allow, with no respec.

Spirit Tap is a 100% Spirit bonus for 15 seconds after a kill, with 50% mana regeneration while casting. A wand is the filler, not a joke.

Best race

Gnome
Alliance
Gnome
Runner-up: Night Elf

Expansive Mind is 5% mana on the longest drink class in the beta. Contingency Plan is an emergency shield if a pull goes wrong before Shadowform’s 15% physical reduction exists.

  • Escape Artist
  • Expansive Mind
  • Engineering Specialization
  • Eureka!
Undead
Horde
Undead
Runner-up: Troll

Cannibalize is health and mana off a corpse, which is the pull-to-pull button Spirit Tap does not cover when the corpse is a humanoid. Touch of the Grave adds a small drain on damaging spells.

  • Underwater Breathing
  • Will of the Forsaken
  • Cannibalize
  • Touch of the Grave

How to play it

  • Shield, Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, wand. Drink only when Spirit Tap missed.
  • One mob until Mind Flay exists. Then the slow lets you wand while walking backward.
  • Do not take Improved Mind Flay until the slow has already saved you a few times and you understand you are trading it for damage.
  • Shadowform the moment the order reaches it. Healing is over. Carry water and bandages.
  • Devouring Plague is baseline at 20. Use it. The talent only makes it cheaper and sticky.

Verdict

Shadow is the damage priest, and Shadowform is the spec. The client talent makes you deal 10% more Shadow damage, cuts Shadow mana costs by 50%, doubles Shadow crit damage, and reduces physical damage taken by 15%. You cannot cast healing spells in that form. Blizzard’s Sep-30 note says non-healing spells still work, and that the damage bonus was cut relative to the old design.

Shadow Weaving no longer buffs the raid. Blizzard moved it to a personal 2% stack, five stacks, 15 seconds. Devouring Plague is now baseline at 20 for every race, and Devouring Contagion cuts its mana cost by 50% and jumps it when the target dies. That is the dungeon cleave, not a second healer.

wowforever.co shows Shadow at A on MMOExp and Overgear and at B on the Sep-16 forum list. Nobody has a level-60 parse. Blizzard’s own line is that Shadow deals strong damage over time and brings less utility than a Warlock. Believe that until raids open.

Improved Mind Flay is a trap in battlegrounds. Rank 2 adds 20% damage and 10 yards, and the tooltip replaces the slow with 20%. Base Mind Flay is a 50% slow. The PvP build leaves Improved Mind Flay empty and keeps the slow.

Strengths

  • Shadowform is 10% damage, 50% cheaper Shadow spells, double crit damage and 15% less physical damage taken.
  • Blackout is a 10% chance for any Shadow damage spell to stun for 3 seconds. Silence is a 5-second silence that no longer requires Improved Psychic Scream.
  • Vampiric Embrace heals the party for 20% of your Shadow damage for 30 seconds, and it can trigger Spirit Tap when the afflicted target dies.
  • Fear Ward, Devouring Plague and Divine Spirit are baseline. You are not locked out of them for being the wrong race.

Weaknesses

  • No healing spells inside Shadowform. You are a DPS who happens to wear cloth.
  • Shadow Weaving is personal now. You do not buff the other caster’s Shadow damage.
  • Blizzard: less utility than a Warlock in the same role. You bring a silence and a stun proc, not a summon or a healthstone.
  • The 50% Mind Flay slow and the damage talent cannot both be maxed. Pick one. This page picks the slow for PvP and the damage for PvE.
