Shadow Focus is 5% Shadow hit. Cloth dies to a Warrior connect, so Stamina outranks the last point of crit until you have a shield macro and a teammate.
Best race
Will to Survive removes stuns. A Shadow Priest who eats a stun dies in cloth before Blackout can answer. Perception is the second button when a Rogue opens on the node.
Sword SpecializationIncreases your critical strike chance with all spells and attacks by 2% while you have a sword or two-handed sword equipped.
The Human SpiritSpirit increased by 5%.
PerceptionInstant, 3 min cooldown. Dramatically increases stealth detection for 20 sec.
Will to SurviveInstant, 3 min cooldown. Instantly removes all Stun effects.
Will of the Forsaken breaks fear, which is how other Priests and Warlocks end your cast. Touch of the Grave is a 10% health drain for casters and no longer breaks crowd control.
Underwater BreathingUnderwater breath lasts 300% longer than normal.
Will of the ForsakenInstant, 2 min cooldown. Instantly removes all Charm, Fear and Sleep effects.
Cannibalize5 yd range, Instant, 2 min cooldown. When activated, regenerates 7% of total Health and 7% of total Mana every 2 sec for 10 sec. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yds. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect.
Touch of the GraveYour spells and attacks with a damage part have a chance (10% for casters, 5% for melee) to drain Health from the target, up to 5% of your maximum Health. 1 sec internal cooldown. Does not break crowd control.

Spell Power on the R14 stave and the R13 chest. The R2 Insignia is the difference between eating a stun and getting a Shadow Word: Pain back out. Rank rewards are datamined beta numbers and may change. Rare PvP gear is not rank-locked but needs level 55; Elite pieces are Emboldened Seal upgrades. R2 Insignia trinket (3,500 Honor, 2,000 more for the epic version) is the stun break. R3 Faction Cloak is 10 Arathi Basin Marks plus 3,000 Honor. Elite wrists and waist are R8, boots R9, gloves R10, legs and shoulders R12, chest and helm R13. R14 unlocks the weapon arsenal. The R7 Battle Standard is a 15% max-health aura on a 10-minute cooldown — carry it if you anchor a node or a flag team.
How to play it
- Shadowform before the fight. You will not be healing. Say that in party chat.
- Shadow Word: Pain, then Mind Flay. The 50% slow is the peel. Do not spend the talent that cuts it to 20%.
- Silence the healer. Blackout stuns are random; do not plan a go around them, but do follow one that lands.
- Vampiric Embrace on the kill target so your team gets 20% of your Shadow damage as healing.
- Psychic Scream when two melee connect. Improved Psychic Scream is in this build because Blackout is already maxed, which is its requirement.
Verdict
Shadow is the damage priest, and Shadowform is the spec. The client talent makes you deal 10% more Shadow damage, cuts Shadow mana costs by 50%, doubles Shadow crit damage, and reduces physical damage taken by 15%. You cannot cast healing spells in that form. Blizzard’s Sep-30 note says non-healing spells still work, and that the damage bonus was cut relative to the old design.
Shadow Weaving no longer buffs the raid. Blizzard moved it to a personal 2% stack, five stacks, 15 seconds. Devouring Plague is now baseline at 20 for every race, and Devouring Contagion cuts its mana cost by 50% and jumps it when the target dies. That is the dungeon cleave, not a second healer.
wowforever.co shows Shadow at A on MMOExp and Overgear and at B on the Sep-16 forum list. Nobody has a level-60 parse. Blizzard’s own line is that Shadow deals strong damage over time and brings less utility than a Warlock. Believe that until raids open.
Improved Mind Flay is a trap in battlegrounds. Rank 2 adds 20% damage and 10 yards, and the tooltip replaces the slow with 20%. Base Mind Flay is a 50% slow. The PvP build leaves Improved Mind Flay empty and keeps the slow.
Strengths
- Shadowform is 10% damage, 50% cheaper Shadow spells, double crit damage and 15% less physical damage taken.
- Blackout is a 10% chance for any Shadow damage spell to stun for 3 seconds. Silence is a 5-second silence that no longer requires Improved Psychic Scream.
- Vampiric Embrace heals the party for 20% of your Shadow damage for 30 seconds, and it can trigger Spirit Tap when the afflicted target dies.
- Fear Ward, Devouring Plague and Divine Spirit are baseline. You are not locked out of them for being the wrong race.
Weaknesses
- No healing spells inside Shadowform. You are a DPS who happens to wear cloth.
- Shadow Weaving is personal now. You do not buff the other caster’s Shadow damage.
- Blizzard: less utility than a Warlock in the same role. You bring a silence and a stun proc, not a summon or a healthstone.
- The 50% Mind Flay slow and the damage talent cannot both be maxed. Pick one. This page picks the slow for PvP and the damage for PvE.
