Discipline Priest
Healer
Shield-first healer: Penance, Renewed Hope and Divine Aegis make Power Word: Shield a rotation, not a panic button.

ProjectionBeta-testedTheoryRespec-free path to a full Discipline healer: wand and Spirit Tap carry levels 10-16, Power in Light and Twin Disciplines make Smite and instants hit harder, Penance arrives at level 35, and the remaining points build the healer core.

Mobalytics lists Intellect, Spirit and Stamina first for mana and survival, with Spell Power for damage; Method adds that Bonus Healing gear now also carries Spell Power, which helps healer-spec leveling. Weapon upgrades and a good wand matter most. Order is my synthesis.
Best race
Contingency Plan can be cast on yourself as a solo panic button, Confounding Flash confuses up to 5 attackers, and Expansive Mind adds 5% max Mana, which matters for a mana-starved caster.
Escape ArtistInstant, 2 min cooldown. Instantly escape the effects of any movement impairing effect and gain immunity to those effects for 3 sec.
Expansive MindMaximum Mana, Rage or Energy increased by 5%, whichever your class uses.
Engineering SpecializationYour gnomish ingenuity reduces the rate of engineering devices failing or backfiring when you use them by 20%.
Eureka!Instant, 2 min cooldown. Your next 3 damaging abilities cost 10% less (Mana, Rage or Energy) and deal 10% more damage. For healers, your next 3 damaging or healing abilities cost 10% less Mana and do 10% more.
Cannibalize and Dark Sacrifice are the strongest mana-recovery tools in the game for a priest who would otherwise be drinking after every pull.
Underwater BreathingUnderwater breath lasts 300% longer than normal.
Will of the ForsakenInstant, 2 min cooldown. Instantly removes all Charm, Fear and Sleep effects.
Cannibalize5 yd range, Instant, 2 min cooldown. When activated, regenerates 7% of total Health and 7% of total Mana every 2 sec for 10 sec. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yds. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect.
Touch of the GraveYour spells and attacks with a damage part have a chance (10% for casters, 5% for melee) to drain Health from the target, up to 5% of your maximum Health. 1 sec internal cooldown. Does not break crowd control.
How to play it
- Take the first two points in Wand Specialization and use the wand to finish every mob, as both Icy Veins healer guides call it the most critical early talent. If you have no wand at level 10, delay and go straight to Spirit Tap.
- Spirit Tap (5 ranks, 100% chance to gain +100% Spirit for 15 seconds after a non-trivial kill) is the second most important early talent per Icy Veins and is the only Shadow talent in this order.
- Solo pull: Power Word: Shield, Holy Fire on the furthest enemy, Smite while it closes, Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, then wand. Power in Light adds up to +10% to Smite and Penance against a target with Holy Fire.
- Penance arrives at level 35 and Soul Warding at 33. Until then you are a Smite-and-wand caster; do dungeon quests, since Icy Veins notes Blizzard cut dungeon mob XP but raised dungeon quest XP.
- Healer spec leveling is the slowest priest path: Mobalytics and Icy Veins both recommend Shadow talents when solo. This order takes Spirit Tap and then commits to Discipline so you never respec on the way to 60.
- Visit your trainer every two levels for new spell ranks and update your action bars; Mobalytics recommends wand macros and the 5-second rule to keep downtime low.
Verdict
Discipline is the priest healer I would bring to every level-60 dungeon. Penance is a channel on a 12-second cooldown that heals an ally (184 at its first rank, instantly and every second for 2 seconds) or hits an enemy (81), Soul Warding cuts Power Word: Shield's cooldown by 4 seconds and its mana by 15%, and Renewed Hope turns every Weakened Soul target into a crit engine: up to +10% crit on Flash Heal, Binding Heal, Heal, Greater Heal and Penance, and up to 5 seconds shaved off Weakened Soul per heal. Add Divine Aegis (crit heals leave a 12-second absorb worth up to 15% of the heal) and Power Infusion (+20% spell damage and healing for 15 seconds on a friendly target) and the tree is internally coherent in a way Classic Discipline never was.
Icy Veins calls it the harder but more rewarding priest healer, with amazing single-target healing, damage and mitigation and no real group healing. The public tier-list aggregate puts it in A (Overgear and the pre-beta forum thread both say A), while Holy swings from S to C depending on who you ask. My call: Discipline wins single-target throughput and tank healing, Holy wins when the whole party is hurt. In 5-mans with a real tank, Discipline is the stronger seat.
Two Sep-24 beta changes matter here: Power Word: Shield can now always overwrite an existing shield on a target that does not have Weakened Soul, and Renew can land critical hits. Blizzard's Sep-30 deep dive also made Fear Ward (level 20) and Divine Spirit (level 30) baseline, so none of your 51 points go to utility the class now owns for free.
The honest weak spot is solo leveling. Mobalytics and Icy Veins both tell the two healer specs to lean on Shadow talents until you can group, and the Discipline leveling order below is built around that reality: a wand, Spirit Tap and Power in Light carry you to Penance, then the tree turns into the healer above.
Strengths
- Best single-target healing and mitigation in the class: Power Word: Shield, Penance and Divine Aegis stack three layers on one target.
- Renewed Hope plus Soul Warding keeps Power Word: Shield cycling far faster than its base Weakened Soul timer allows.
- Penance and Power in Light give real damage while you wait for the party to get hurt, in solo and in dungeons.
- Power Infusion (+20% spell damage and healing for 15 seconds) is a raid-grade buff on a 1-point talent, and Meditation makes casting mana far cheaper to sustain.
Weaknesses
- Little group healing: no talent here improves Prayer of Healing, and Prayer of Mending lives in the Holy tree.
- Weak solo leveler; the guides recommend Shadow talents or a group until the Penance level range.
- Cloth armor and no escapes or mobility beyond Levitate: you rely on friends for peel and positioning.
- Every L60 conclusion on this page is a projection from beta talent text and level 20-30 reports; item stats are hidden until launch.
