Stat priority

  1. Bonus Healing
  2. Stamina
  3. Intellect
  4. Crit
  5. Spirit
  6. MP5

Method confirms Bonus Healing gear also carries Spell Power now. Skip Hit entirely: Blizzard added Holy Precision (up to +18% Holy hit) so healing priests do not need it. Stamina rides high because the other team will focus you; Crit sits above Spirit because Renewed Hope, Divine Aegis and Inner Focus all scale with it. Ordering is my projection; item stats stay hidden until items drop.

Best race

Human
Alliance
Human
Runner-up: Gnome

Will to Survive breaks every Stun on a 3-minute cooldown, Divine Grace instantly heals a friend below 50% and removes Weakened Soul so your next Shield is immediate, and Perception counters stealthers. Mobalytics calls Human the PvP pick for priests.

  • The Human Spirit
  • Perception

Undead

Undead
Runner-up: Troll

Will of the Forsaken strips Fear, Charm and Sleep every 2 minutes, which is the whole Warlock and Priest crowd control kit, while Cannibalize and Dark Sacrifice refill mana between fights.

Buy the R2 Insignia trinket first (3,500 Honor, 2,000 for the Elite upgrade) and the R3 cloak (10 Arathi Basin Marks + 3,000 Honor). R7 Battle Standard (15% max health aura to nearby allies, 10-minute cooldown) is a team tool worth having when you call the fights. Elite pieces by rank: R8 wrist and waist, R9 boots, R10 gloves, R12 legs and shoulders, R13 chest and helm. Rare-quality PvP gear is not rank-locked but needs level 55. At R14 the healer weapon to chase is the Tome of Restoration off-hand (10 Darkspear Islands Marks + 7,000 Honor, Alliance name; same cost for Horde). Source: Icy Veins PvP rank system.

How to play it

  • Role: team-fight healer in Arathi Basin and Darkspear Islands, and the sturdy backline for a Warsong Gulch flag carrier. Shield the carrier (or your frontline) before every engagement.
  • Rhythm is Power Word: Shield, then Penance on whoever is falling, then Renew and Heal to fill. Soul Warding and Renewed Hope shorten the Weakened Soul gap, so heal your shielded targets to re-shield them sooner.
  • Inner Focus makes your next spell free and adds 25% crit chance: use it on a Greater Heal or Penance when someone is about to die, not on cooldown.
  • Martyrdom gives 100% Focused Casting for 6 seconds after a melee or ranged crit lands on you, and Twilight Focus gives a 70% chance to avoid damage pushback on any spell. Together they are your anti-interrupt kit.
  • Power Infusion (+20% spell damage and healing for 15 seconds) goes on your best caster or fellow healer at the start of a fight, not on a melee target.
  • Fear Ward is baseline from level 20; keep it on whoever you most need alive against Warlocks and Priests.

Verdict

Discipline is the priest healer I would bring to every level-60 dungeon. Penance is a channel on a 12-second cooldown that heals an ally (184 at its first rank, instantly and every second for 2 seconds) or hits an enemy (81), Soul Warding cuts Power Word: Shield's cooldown by 4 seconds and its mana by 15%, and Renewed Hope turns every Weakened Soul target into a crit engine: up to +10% crit on Flash Heal, Binding Heal, Heal, Greater Heal and Penance, and up to 5 seconds shaved off Weakened Soul per heal. Add Divine Aegis (crit heals leave a 12-second absorb worth up to 15% of the heal) and Power Infusion (+20% spell damage and healing for 15 seconds on a friendly target) and the tree is internally coherent in a way Classic Discipline never was.

Icy Veins calls it the harder but more rewarding priest healer, with amazing single-target healing, damage and mitigation and no real group healing. The public tier-list aggregate puts it in A (Overgear and the pre-beta forum thread both say A), while Holy swings from S to C depending on who you ask. My call: Discipline wins single-target throughput and tank healing, Holy wins when the whole party is hurt. In 5-mans with a real tank, Discipline is the stronger seat.

Two Sep-24 beta changes matter here: Power Word: Shield can now always overwrite an existing shield on a target that does not have Weakened Soul, and Renew can land critical hits. Blizzard's Sep-30 deep dive also made Fear Ward (level 20) and Divine Spirit (level 30) baseline, so none of your 51 points go to utility the class now owns for free.

The honest weak spot is solo leveling. Mobalytics and Icy Veins both tell the two healer specs to lean on Shadow talents until you can group, and the Discipline leveling order below is built around that reality: a wand, Spirit Tap and Power in Light carry you to Penance, then the tree turns into the healer above.

Strengths

  • Best single-target healing and mitigation in the class: Power Word: Shield, Penance and Divine Aegis stack three layers on one target.
  • Renewed Hope plus Soul Warding keeps Power Word: Shield cycling far faster than its base Weakened Soul timer allows.
  • Penance and Power in Light give real damage while you wait for the party to get hurt, in solo and in dungeons.
  • Power Infusion (+20% spell damage and healing for 15 seconds) is a raid-grade buff on a 1-point talent, and Meditation makes casting mana far cheaper to sustain.

Weaknesses

  • Little group healing: no talent here improves Prayer of Healing, and Prayer of Mending lives in the Holy tree.
  • Weak solo leveler; the guides recommend Shadow talents or a group until the Penance level range.
  • Cloth armor and no escapes or mobility beyond Levitate: you rely on friends for peel and positioning.
  • Every L60 conclusion on this page is a projection from beta talent text and level 20-30 reports; item stats are hidden until launch.
