Build 1.60.1.70124

Ice Lance by 20, Ice Barrier by 60

SupportedBeta-testedTheory

A wand finishes mobs so the five-second rule can give mana back. Icy Veins names Greater Magic Wand at level 13 as the cheap early weapon.

Best race

Gnome
Alliance
Gnome
Runner-up: Human

Icy Veins’ Frost page picks Gnome for Escape Artist and the extra mana. Ignore that page’s 50% Eureka! figure; the Sep-28 race guide and the Sep-24 notes both say 10%.

  • Escape Artist
  • Expansive Mind
  • Engineering Specialization
  • Eureka!
Orc
Horde
Orc
Runner-up: Undead

Blood Fury is 10% Spell Power on a two-minute cooldown, shorter than Troll Berserking, which Icy Veins notes also burns mana faster.

  • Blood Fury
  • Hardiness
  • Axe Specialization
  • Shatter Curse

How to play it

  • One mob at a time until Frost Nova and Ice Lance are both in the bar. Drink before you are empty.
  • Frostbolt until Frostbite freezes, then Ice Lance. Do not cancel the bolt.
  • Frost Nova and walk back if they touch you. Wand the last 20% so mana starts regenerating.
  • Blizzard only with a partner. Solo, the mana is not worth the pack.
  • No respec at 40. The same tree is the level-60 Frost build, minus a few Arcane points you add as they unlock.

Verdict

Frost is the control mage. Icy Veins describes it as the spec that slows and freezes targets and keeps casting under pressure, and says outright that it will not top the damage meters. The client agrees: Improved Frostbolt cuts the cast by 0.5 seconds, Elemental Precision is 5% Frost and Fire hit, Ice Shards doubles Frost crit damage, and Ice Barrier is a shield that also stops pushback while it holds.

Public PvE lists put Frost in the third band. wowforever.co shows MMOExp, the Sep-16 forum list and Overgear all at B, under Arcane (S everywhere those lists rank it) and usually under Fire. That is the right read for raids. Frost is the battleground mage, not the raid mage.

Icy Veins’ Sep-17 Frost page still says Gnome Eureka! cuts the cost of the next three casts by 50%. The Sep-24 notes and the Sep-28 race guide both put Eureka! at 10% cost and 10% damage or healing. This page follows the later number. Escape Artist is still a real second root-break next to Blink.

Play Frost if you want the flag stopped and the caster alive. Play Arcane if the only score that matters is dungeon damage. Every 51-point split here is a projection from talent text; the first 11 leveling points follow Icy Veins’ level-20 Frost build.

Strengths

  • Best control in the class: Permafrost adds 10% slow and 33% chill duration, Frostbite freezes, Shatter is +50% crit on Frozen targets, and Fingers of Frost treats the next two spells as if the target were Frozen.
  • Ice Lance deals 300% damage to Frozen targets and is instant, so Frost is the mage spec that keeps doing damage while moving (Icy Veins).
  • Ice Barrier absorbs damage and stops cast pushback while the shield holds. Cold Snap resets the other Frost cooldowns, including Ice Block.
  • Winter’s Chill stacks to +10% crit for your own Frostbolt and Ice Lance, which is the raid reason to bring one Frost mage even if Arcane wins the meter.

Weaknesses

  • Icy Veins: Frost will not top the meters. Three published DPS lists put it at B, behind Arcane.
  • Most of the damage is still a cast. Ice Lance helps, it does not replace Frostbolt.
  • Needs a freeze to turn on Shatter and the 300% Ice Lance. Bosses that cannot be frozen lose that package.
  • Mana stops you more often than other classes while leveling (Icy Veins). The 51-point build has not been played at 60.
