Frost Mage

Ranged DPS

Slows, freezes and Ice Barrier: the safe mage, not the top of the meter.

Verified 2026-10-01
Build 1.60.1.70124

Deep Frost control (17/0/34)

ProjectionTheory

Ice Barrier, Shatter, Fingers of Frost and a 4-second Improved Counterspell silence. Arcane stays shallow: hit, clearcasting, resistance reduction and the silence. No Presence of Mind — that row needs 20 Arcane points.

Escape Artist is a second root and snare break on top of Blink, and Expansive Mind is 5% more mana. Eureka! is only 10% cost and 10% damage on the next three abilities after Sep 24, so it is a bonus, not the reason.

Will of the Forsaken breaks Charm, Fear and Sleep, which is the battleground button. Touch of the Grave procs at 10% for casters and does not break crowd control after Sep 24.

A Frost mage wants the R14 stave or mageblade and the R13 chest and helm for Intellect and Stamina. The R2 Insignia matters more than any armor piece, because Ice Block is already your panic button. Rank rewards are datamined beta numbers and may change. Rare PvP gear is not rank-locked but needs level 55; Elite pieces are Emboldened Seal upgrades. R2 Insignia trinket (3,500 Honor, 2,000 more for the epic version) is the stun break. R3 Faction Cloak is 10 Arathi Basin Marks plus 3,000 Honor. Elite wrists and waist are R8, boots R9, gloves R10, legs and shoulders R12, chest and helm R13. R14 unlocks the weapon arsenal. The R7 Battle Standard is a 15% max-health aura on a 10-minute cooldown — carry it if you anchor a node or a flag team.

How to play it

  • Open with Frostbolt. Permafrost’s extra slow is the peel; do not Frost Nova the first target unless they close.
  • Frozen target: Ice Lance, then Shatter-boosted Frostbolt. Fingers of Frost lets you bank two “treated as Frozen” spells.
  • Improved Counterspell is a 4-second silence. Use it on the healer, not on a Frostbolt.
  • Ice Barrier before you plant. Ice Block when the stun lands and the Insignia is down. Cold Snap brings both back.
  • You are the flag stopper and the node peeler, not the flag carrier. Polymorph the off-target.

Verdict

Frost is the control mage. Icy Veins describes it as the spec that slows and freezes targets and keeps casting under pressure, and says outright that it will not top the damage meters. The client agrees: Improved Frostbolt cuts the cast by 0.5 seconds, Elemental Precision is 5% Frost and Fire hit, Ice Shards doubles Frost crit damage, and Ice Barrier is a shield that also stops pushback while it holds.

Public PvE lists put Frost in the third band. wowforever.co shows MMOExp, the Sep-16 forum list and Overgear all at B, under Arcane (S everywhere those lists rank it) and usually under Fire. That is the right read for raids. Frost is the battleground mage, not the raid mage.

Icy Veins’ Sep-17 Frost page still says Gnome Eureka! cuts the cost of the next three casts by 50%. The Sep-24 notes and the Sep-28 race guide both put Eureka! at 10% cost and 10% damage or healing. This page follows the later number. Escape Artist is still a real second root-break next to Blink.

Play Frost if you want the flag stopped and the caster alive. Play Arcane if the only score that matters is dungeon damage. Every 51-point split here is a projection from talent text; the first 11 leveling points follow Icy Veins’ level-20 Frost build.

Strengths

  • Best control in the class: Permafrost adds 10% slow and 33% chill duration, Frostbite freezes, Shatter is +50% crit on Frozen targets, and Fingers of Frost treats the next two spells as if the target were Frozen.
  • Ice Lance deals 300% damage to Frozen targets and is instant, so Frost is the mage spec that keeps doing damage while moving (Icy Veins).
  • Ice Barrier absorbs damage and stops cast pushback while the shield holds. Cold Snap resets the other Frost cooldowns, including Ice Block.
  • Winter’s Chill stacks to +10% crit for your own Frostbolt and Ice Lance, which is the raid reason to bring one Frost mage even if Arcane wins the meter.

Weaknesses

  • Icy Veins: Frost will not top the meters. Three published DPS lists put it at B, behind Arcane.
  • Most of the damage is still a cast. Ice Lance helps, it does not replace Frostbolt.
  • Needs a freeze to turn on Shatter and the 300% Ice Lance. Bosses that cannot be frozen lose that package.
  • Mana stops you more often than other classes while leveling (Icy Veins). The 51-point build has not been played at 60.
