This is Icy Veins' Fire ranking from the level 20 beta: Hit, Spell Power, then Crit, which they call 'a great damage increase for Fire Mages'. They publish no hit cap, so do not apply TBC math. Item stats stay hidden until items drop.
Best race
Sword Specialization adds 2% crit to all spells with a sword equipped, and Icy Veins calls that presumably the best damage increase in a standing-still Patchwerk fight. It needs a sword; Gnome is the fallback if staves win.
Sword SpecializationIncreases your critical strike chance with all spells and attacks by 2% while you have a sword or two-handed sword equipped.
The Human SpiritSpirit increased by 5%.
PerceptionInstant, 3 min cooldown. Dramatically increases stealth detection for 20 sec.
Will to SurviveInstant, 3 min cooldown. Instantly removes all Stun effects.
Berserking gives +10% spellcasting speed for 10 s, which shortens Pyroblast and Fireball casts, and Beast Slaying adds 5% vs Beasts. Icy Veins gives Trolls a slight edge over Orcs in PvE.
BerserkingInstant, 3 min cooldown. Increases your spellcasting and attack speed by 10% for 10 sec.
RegenerationHealth regeneration rate increased by 10%. In addition, 10% of total Health regeneration will continue during combat.
Beast SlayingDamage dealt versus Beasts increased by 5%.
Rapid RegenerationChanneled, 3 min cooldown. Regenerate 50% of your maximum Health over 6 sec. Any movement, action, or damage taken will cancel the effect.

How to play it
- Opener: Pyroblast for the DoT, then Fireball (Improved Fireball shaves 0.5 s) or Frostfire Bolt once you learn it. Icy Veins says you get it around level 40.
- Keep Improved Scorch stacked: Scorch has a 100% chance to add a 3%-per-stack Fire vulnerability (5 stacks, 30 s). Scorch crits also feed Hot Streak.
- Hot Streak comes from non-periodic crits with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch and lasts 20 s. Each stack takes 25% off Pyroblast; spend it at three stacks (1.5 s).
- Fire Blast on a kill gives +50% crit chance on the next one for 30 s (Wake of Fire); Incineration adds +6% to Fire Blast and Scorch crit, so that ping feeds Hot Streak.
- Use Combustion on cooldown during a burn: +10% Fire crit per hit until 4 non-periodic crits land, which is when Ignite stacks are largest.
- Mana: Master of Elements refunds 30% of base mana on Fire and Frost crits, so mana improves as crit improves.
- Threat: Ignite crits can out-pull a tank. Keep Frost Nova ready and open after the tank has aggro (Icy Veins).
- Raids open 2026-12-09. Fire-resistant bosses are why Frostfire Bolt exists (Icy Veins names Ragnaros).
Verdict
Fire is a damage-only spec and it knows it. Icy Veins says Fire Mages are 'built for one thing: high and consistent damage'. Ignite adds 40% of every Fire crit as a 4 s burn, Hot Streak turns non-periodic crits into a Pyroblast that drops from 6 s to 1.5 s at three stacks, and Combustion gives a 10%-per-hit crit ramp until four crits land. Frostfire Bolt fixes the old problem of fire-resistant bosses: it uses whichever school the target resists less.
The rating is the most disputed in the class. wowforever.co shows Fire at A in two sources (MMOExp, Overgear) and at F in a player-posted Blizzard-forum list, which also put Arcane at S. Nobody has sims. Take that as 'real but unproven': Fire's strength depends on crit chance you will not have until level 60 gear, so the beta (cap 30) underrates it.
Sep-24 was a mixed patch. Hot Streak now lasts 20 s (was 15), Wake of Fire's Fire Blast bonus lasts 30 s (was 20), and Ignite no longer double-dips on percentage damage modifiers, which foreverchanges.pro files as a nerf. The vendored talent data (client build 1.60.1.70009) already carries the 20 s and 30 s numbers.
My call: play Fire if you want Ignite-and-Pyroblast pressure and can live with a slower 10-40. Pick Arcane if you want the safest-rated mage. Every level 60 allocation here is a projection; the level 10-20 path follows Icy Veins' beta level 20 build.
Strengths
- Highest sustained single-target ceiling in the class on paper: Fire Power (+10% Fire damage), Critical Mass (+6% crit), Master of Elements mana refunds and Combustion all stack on one school.
- Hot Streak lets you cast Pyroblast on the move-friendly 1.5 s timer at three stacks, and the Pyroblast DoT plus Ignite soften movement phases (Icy Veins).
- Strong AoE for leveling and trash: Flamestrike, Blast Wave and Arcane Explosion, with Improved Flamestrike adding +15% crit.
- Burning Soul gives Fire spells a 70% chance not to lose casting time when hit, which is rare reliability for a caster.
- Improved Scorch stacks a 3%-per-stack Fire vulnerability up to 5 stacks for 30 s on your target.
Weaknesses
- Needs crit to function and low-level characters do not have it. Icy Veins says Fire levels slightly slower than the other specs and the key talents sit deep in the tree.
- Glass cannon. Ignite crits can pull threat from a tank quickly and Icy Veins tells Fire mages to keep Frost Nova ready.
- Ignite no longer double-dips (Sep-24 nerf) and its ceiling has not been tested against real level 60 gear.
- Fire resistance on bosses (Icy Veins names Ragnaros) means a Fire mage needs Frostfire Bolt or Arcane Subtlety-style resistance reduction.
- Rating is contested: the spec is A in two sources and F in another.
