Build 1.60.1.70124

Dungeon and raid HoT healer: Resto 38 + Balance 13

ProjectionTheory

Keep the whole healing core through Wild Growth, then spend 13 points in Balance on Improved Wrath, Genesis, Nature's Majesty and Nature's Splendor. You get +5% periodic healing, +4% crit for crit-capable HoTs and longer Rejuvenation and Regrowth.

Stat priority

  1. Bonus Healing
  2. Intellect
  3. Spirit
  4. Critical Strike
  5. Haste

Icy Veins' level-20 list, kept for L60 as a projection. Spirit rises in value with Reflection (50% regeneration while casting) and Living Spirit (+15% Spirit). Crit is meaningful now that HoTs crit. Haste does not affect HoT healing or tick rate (Icy Veins). Item stats are hidden until drops.

How to play it

  • Keep Rejuvenation on the tank and on anyone taking steady damage; with Gift of the Earthmother it has a 1-sec global cooldown.
  • Swiftmend requires an active Rejuvenation or Regrowth, heals the full HoT duration, and no longer removes the HoT (Blizzard); chain Rejuvenation then Swiftmend for spot healing.
  • Wild Growth (6-sec cooldown, high Mana cost) puts a front-loaded 7-sec HoT on the target's whole party; it is your 5-man group heal.
  • Omen of Clarity is baseline and procs on heals as well as spells (Icy Veins); Regrowth's cost is much lower now because Mana scales with the upfront heal.
  • Cast Thorns on the tank: it now scales with the druid's spell power. Mark of the Wild buffs the group, and Rebirth and Revive cover resurrections.
  • Between heals, Moonfire and Wrath are cheap filler, and with Improved Wrath's 50% Mana discount and Naturalist's +5% damage you can speed up runs.

Verdict

Restoration in Forever plays like a later-era healer more than a Vanilla one, and that is why I rate it. Wild Growth (the 31-point talent) heals a target and its whole party, including pets, with a 7-sec HoT on a 6-sec cooldown; Swiftmend no longer consumes the Rejuvenation or Regrowth under it; Gift of the Earthmother cuts the global cooldown on Rejuvenation, Swiftmend and Wild Growth to 1 sec; and the Sep-24 build lets Rejuvenation, Tranquility and Wild Growth crit (Regrowth already could). Icy Veins calls it a 'powerhouse dungeon healer'.

Mana is the one thing Resto must solve and Reflection solves it: 50% of Mana regeneration continues while casting, and Living Spirit adds +15% Spirit. The dungeon build is 38 points of Restoration plus 13 in Balance. Genesis adds +5% to periodic healing, Nature's Majesty adds +4% crit that HoTs now use, Nature's Splendor stretches Rejuvenation by 3 sec and Regrowth by 6 sec, and Improved Wrath makes your damage filler cheap. I drop Furor, Subtlety, Natural Shapeshifter and Improved Tranquility to pay for it.

Limits are well documented. Icy Veins notes druid healers have no absorb, Tranquility only heals your own party, a utility kit weaker than Shaman, and Tree Form and Lifebloom are not in the game. Leveling as Resto is the slowest of the three trees, so most players will level Feral or Balance and heal dungeons on the way. Rankings are split: Overgear puts Restoration in its second band, the Blizzard-forum thread in its fourth, so level-60 data on Dec 9 decides it.

Strengths

  • Wild Growth heals a party-wide HoT on a 6-sec cooldown and Swiftmend is an instant spot heal that no longer eats your HoT (Blizzard).
  • Gift of the Earthmother brings Rejuvenation, Swiftmend and Wild Growth to a 1-sec global cooldown, so you can blanket a group fast.
  • Reflection allows 50% Mana regeneration while casting, and Rejuvenation, Tranquility, Wild Growth and Regrowth can all crit now.
  • Highly mobile: many key spells are instant-cast, plus Dash, Travel Form and shapeshifting to break roots (Icy Veins); Revive and Rebirth cover resurrections.

Weaknesses

  • No absorb, no true party-wide emergency button besides Wild Growth, and Tranquility heals only your own party (Icy Veins).
  • Utility kit is weaker than Shaman's: no snare, silence or interrupt (Blizzard) and Entangling Roots is the only crowd control.
  • Slow to level: damage is the lowest of the three trees, so Icy Veins suggests levelling Feral or Balance instead.
  • Tree Form and Lifebloom are absent; HoTs do not scale with Haste, so that stat is weak for the spec (Icy Veins).
