Stat priority
- Bonus Healing
- Intellect
- Spirit
- Critical Strike
- Haste
Icy Veins' beta order. Healers are told to favor Healing Power and Intellect on the highest item-level piece; Bonus Healing also includes one-third as much bonus damage (Blizzard), which helps questing.
Best race
Quickness adds +2% movement speed, and Elune's Light and Shadowmeld help a slow-killing leveler survive bad pulls.
ShadowmeldInstant, 10 sec cooldown. Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Using this ability in combat discourages enemies from attacking you, but increases the cooldown to 2 min.
QuicknessDodge chance increased by 1% and movement speed increased by 2%. Night Elf Rogues and Druids are harder to detect in Stealth as if they were 1 level higher.
Wisp SpiritTransform into a wisp upon death, increasing movement speed by 75%.
Elune's LightInstant, 3 min cooldown. Increases your critical strike chance with all spells and attacks by 10% for 15 sec.
Plainsrunning builds up to +30% run speed and 5% extra Health means fewer deaths while leveling slowly.
War Stomp0.5 sec cast, 2 min cooldown. Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yds for 2 sec.
EnduranceTotal Health increased by 5% and chance to hit increased by 1%.
CultivationInstant, 1 hour cooldown. Cultivate a nearby herb, growing a duplicate you can harvest without requiring Herbalism skill. Each herb may only be cultivated once.
PlainsrunningGain 1% increased movement speed every 5 sec spent moving, up to a maximum of 30% increase. Taking damage or standing still will reduce this effect.
How to play it
- Levels 10-14: Improved Wrath. Icy Veins' world-content build picks it as a big damage boost that also cuts the time you spend drinking.
- Kill with Moonfire (instant, great for pulling) and Wrath, then heal yourself with Rejuvenation; Nature's Focus (levels 15-19) keeps those casts from being interrupted.
- Naturalist (20-24) gives +5% damage and a faster Healing Touch; Reflection (25-27) lets 50% of Mana regeneration continue while you cast.
- Icy Veins says you can heal dungeons 100% fine with this world-content layout, so queue as a healer while you level.
- You can respec for 1 silver in the beta, but this order needs none; Swiftmend and Gift of Nature fill 36-39 and Wild Growth lands at level 55.
- Take the Revive quest-trainer spell at 12 and Cure Poison quest at 14: groups expect both.
Verdict
Restoration in Forever plays like a later-era healer more than a Vanilla one, and that is why I rate it. Wild Growth (the 31-point talent) heals a target and its whole party, including pets, with a 7-sec HoT on a 6-sec cooldown; Swiftmend no longer consumes the Rejuvenation or Regrowth under it; Gift of the Earthmother cuts the global cooldown on Rejuvenation, Swiftmend and Wild Growth to 1 sec; and the Sep-24 build lets Rejuvenation, Tranquility and Wild Growth crit (Regrowth already could). Icy Veins calls it a 'powerhouse dungeon healer'.
Mana is the one thing Resto must solve and Reflection solves it: 50% of Mana regeneration continues while casting, and Living Spirit adds +15% Spirit. The dungeon build is 38 points of Restoration plus 13 in Balance. Genesis adds +5% to periodic healing, Nature's Majesty adds +4% crit that HoTs now use, Nature's Splendor stretches Rejuvenation by 3 sec and Regrowth by 6 sec, and Improved Wrath makes your damage filler cheap. I drop Furor, Subtlety, Natural Shapeshifter and Improved Tranquility to pay for it.
Limits are well documented. Icy Veins notes druid healers have no absorb, Tranquility only heals your own party, a utility kit weaker than Shaman, and Tree Form and Lifebloom are not in the game. Leveling as Resto is the slowest of the three trees, so most players will level Feral or Balance and heal dungeons on the way. Rankings are split: Overgear puts Restoration in its second band, the Blizzard-forum thread in its fourth, so level-60 data on Dec 9 decides it.
Strengths
- Wild Growth heals a party-wide HoT on a 6-sec cooldown and Swiftmend is an instant spot heal that no longer eats your HoT (Blizzard).
- Gift of the Earthmother brings Rejuvenation, Swiftmend and Wild Growth to a 1-sec global cooldown, so you can blanket a group fast.
- Reflection allows 50% Mana regeneration while casting, and Rejuvenation, Tranquility, Wild Growth and Regrowth can all crit now.
- Highly mobile: many key spells are instant-cast, plus Dash, Travel Form and shapeshifting to break roots (Icy Veins); Revive and Rebirth cover resurrections.
Weaknesses
- No absorb, no true party-wide emergency button besides Wild Growth, and Tranquility heals only your own party (Icy Veins).
- Utility kit is weaker than Shaman's: no snare, silence or interrupt (Blizzard) and Entangling Roots is the only crowd control.
- Slow to level: damage is the lowest of the three trees, so Icy Veins suggests levelling Feral or Balance instead.
- Tree Form and Lifebloom are absent; HoTs do not scale with Haste, so that stat is weak for the spec (Icy Veins).
