Protection Warrior

Tank

Shield Slam, Last Stand and a Charge that works in Defensive Stance.

Verified 2026-10-01
Build 1.60.1.70124

Shield on, Cruelty until Shield Slam

ProjectionTheory

Shield Specialization, Anticipation and Toughness first, because you are holding a shield from level 10. Five Fury points of Cruelty are the only off-tree damage, and they sit in row 1 so they never fight the tank path. Shield Slam is taken the moment Concussion Blow and the row gate allow.

A shield with block value beats a two-hander that makes you level faster and then makes you useless in the dungeon. Icy Veins’ Fury page tells warriors to keep a shield in the bag. This spec wears it.

Best race

Dwarf
Alliance
Dwarf
Runner-up: Human

Stoneform saves the pull that poisoned you. You are the only Alliance warrior race whose defensive is a dispel.

  • Find Treasure
  • Stoneform
  • Mace Specialization
  • Big Game Hunter
Tauren
Horde
Tauren
Runner-up: Orc

5% health from Endurance is more leveling health than Orc’s Blood Fury, and 1% hit is 1% more Sunders that land. War Stomp is the second mob.

  • War Stomp
  • Endurance
  • Cultivation
  • Plainsrunning

How to play it

  • Shield, Defensive Stance once you have it, Thunder Clap, Sunder. One mob until Last Stand exists.
  • Charge only with Vanguard once the order reaches it. Before that, stance-swap costs all but 10 Rage. Baseline Tactical Mastery is that 10.
  • Eat. Last Stand is not a heal, and it arrives late.
  • Tank the dungeon when someone asks. That is the point of the spec. Do not duel-wield the trash and swap for the boss if you can help it; Defiance wants the shield the whole time.
  • Victory Rush at 20 is your only real heal on a kill. Use the window between pulls.

Verdict

Protection is the shield tank. Shield Slam deals 421 to 439 plus your block value, with a 50% chance to dispel one magic effect, and Blizzard says it causes a very high amount of threat. Concussion Blow is a 5-second stun and the requirement for Shield Slam. Last Stand is 30% of your maximum health for 20 seconds. Bastion is 10% damage while a shield is equipped.

Blizzard’s Sep-30 deep dive made several of the old tax talents baseline: Improved Shield Block, Improved Taunt, and a Tactical Mastery that keeps 10 Rage on a stance swap. Vanguard, the new 16-point talent, lets you Charge in Defensive Stance. Thunder Clap works in Defensive Stance and scales with Attack Power. Sunder Armor’s threat scales with Attack Power, and it works even if a stronger Expose Armor is already on the target.

Rage from taking damage ignores armor and absorbs, so a shield no longer starves you, and a Power Word: Shield on you no longer deletes your Rage. Rage from dealing damage is normalized, and Blizzard says Rage bugs are still open. wowforever.co puts Protection at A on Overgear and at B on the forum list. There is no tank parse.

This is the main tank. Feral and Paladin Protection exist. You bring Shield Slam, a stun, and a disarm cooldown reduction the others do not copy. Level-60 points are a projection from the client tree.

Strengths

  • Shield Slam is the threat button and a magic dispel. Concussion Blow is a 5-second stun on a tank, which is rare.
  • Last Stand is 30% health for 20 seconds. Shield Wall’s cooldown is 15 minutes baseline, and Improved Shield Wall cuts another 11 minutes in the builds that take it.
  • Vanguard means you do not leave Defensive Stance to Charge. That was the old gap.
  • Shield Specialization is 5 Rage on block, at a 100% chance, and Anticipation is 20 Defense skill. Blizzard doubled the Defense per point.

Weaknesses

  • Blizzard: Warriors lack an easy way to recover once the damage gets ahead of them. Last Stand delays that. It does not heal you.
  • Defiance’s extra threat requires a shield. You cannot “just dual-wield for damage” and keep the talent.
  • Rage bugs are still live. A tank who cannot generate Rage cannot Sunder. That is a beta problem, not a talent problem.
  • No ranged threat beyond what you can Charge. Thunder Clap is melee. A runner still needs a Hamstring or a teammate.
