Holy Paladin

Healer

Light's Vigil finally gives Holy an AoE answer; single-target healing and buffs are still the class's calling card.

Holy Paladin: healing-first leveling path

SupportedBeta-testedTheory

Holy leveling is dungeon-and-quest-chain support rather than fast solo kills. The first 21 points follow Icy Veins' level-20 build and finish on the PvE build, so you never respec.

  2. Intellect
  3. Spirit

Bonus Healing now also grants one third as much bonus damage (Blizzard deep dive), which helps Holy solo play. Spirit regenerates between pulls and works while casting with Reverence.

Best race

Human
Alliance
Human
Runner-up: Dwarf

The Human Spirit (+5% Spirit) plus Reverence cuts drinking time between pulls, and Sword Specialization adds crit if you find a sword.

  • Sword Specialization
  • The Human Spirit
  • Perception
  • Will to Survive
Undead
Horde
Undead

Only Horde option. Cannibalize on corpses refills Health and Mana quickly between pulls.

  • Underwater Breathing
  • Will of the Forsaken
  • Cannibalize
  • Touch of the Grave

How to play it

  • Dungeon XP was nerfed but dungeon quest XP was boosted, so run only the dungeons you hold quests for and quest in between.
  • Early talents: Divine Intellect, Healing Light, then Reverence, exactly as Icy Veins recommends for level 20.
  • Keep Seal of Righteousness up, use Judgement and Holy Strike on cooldown, and heal yourself with Flash of Light; you are nearly unkillable but kill slowly.
  • Use Lay on Hands only in emergencies: it heals you or an ally for your max health and drains all your mana.
  • Log out in a capital or inn to bank rested XP, as both Icy Veins guides advise.
  • Holy Shock arrives at point 26 (level 35) and Light's Vigil at point 32 (level 41); until then Flash of Light and Holy Light carry you.

Verdict

Holy Paladin is the healer you bring for single-target throughput and the deepest utility kit in the game, and Forever patches its one historic hole. Light's Vigil (the row-7 capstone, which pushed Holy Shock up the tree) marks one party member for 30 sec: your next Holy Shock on them has no cooldown and heals their party for 325 to 343. Blizzard's deep dive calls it a high-cost cooldown that can reset Holy Shock, and Icy Veins expects it to be the fix for group damage. We build around it.

The catch is arithmetic. The Holy tree in the vendored client data holds only 46 talent points, so a 51-point build has to leave it. We spend 32 to 33 points on the healing spine (Divine Intellect, Healing Light, Reverence, Illumination, Infusion of Light, Holy Power, Light's Vigil) and put the spillover where it actually helps a healer: Protection for armor, Defense and cooldown cuts, plus Benediction in PvE for cheaper instant spells and dispels. Nobody has tested this at level 60. The Holy Shock-to-Light's Vigil half of the tree is out of reach at the current level cap of 30.

Outside rankings do not agree, so do not treat Holy as a sure S-tier pick. wowforever.co's side-by-side shows the Blizzard forum list at C and Overgear at B for Holy Paladin, while ExpCarry (a seller, so corroboration only) puts it in A among level-20 healers. Restoration Druid is the beta's healer of the moment. Our case for Holy is Light's Vigil plus Blessings, Auras, Lay on Hands and plate, not a measured throughput lead.

Sep-24 notes that matter here: Improved Holy Strike was removed and its 10 sec cooldown made baseline for every Paladin, and Holy Power now also adds its +15% crit to Holy Strike. Neither changes the healing build, but it makes the damage-assisted Shockadin style slightly more viable for solo play.

Strengths

  • Light's Vigil lets one Holy Shock reset itself and heal an entire party, fixing the AoE gap Holy has had since Vanilla.
  • Illumination plus Reverence is a real mana engine: crits refund 50% of base cost and 30% of regeneration continues while casting.
  • Voice of Truth (6 sec silence and interrupt immunity) and Spiritual Focus (70% chance to keep casting through damage) make casts reliable.
  • Best-in-class group utility: all Blessings now last 60 minutes and Blessing of Kings is trainer-taught, plus Blessing of Protection, Freedom and Lay on Hands as panic buttons.

Weaknesses

  • Very weak mobility. Icy Veins calls it the class's sole weakness and Holy has no movement tools.
  • The Holy tree has only 46 points, so 5 to 19 points go to filler in other trees; the build is a compromise, not a pure Holy tree.
  • Light's Vigil is expensive and limited to one active per party. Its real value is unproven until level 60 gear and fights exist.
  • Leveling as Holy is slow and dungeon XP was nerfed; you lack personal damage when questing alone.
  • No interrupt and no slow, as Blizzard says plainly in the deep dive.
