Icy Veins' Marksmanship level-20 list. Slower, harder-hitting weapons are better because Aimed Shot uses weapon damage. Crit matters more here than for Beast Mastery because Mortal Shots and Lethal Attacks feed on it, but it is rare on low-level gear.

Runner-up: TrollIcy Veins: Tauren is the single strongest Hunter race for leveling thanks to Plainsrunning (30% speed) letting you kite every target from range.
War Stomp0.5 sec cast, 2 min cooldown. Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yds for 2 sec.
EnduranceTotal Health increased by 5% and chance to hit increased by 1%.
CultivationInstant, 1 hour cooldown. Cultivate a nearby herb, growing a duplicate you can harvest without requiring Herbalism skill. Each herb may only be cultivated once.
PlainsrunningGain 1% increased movement speed every 5 sec spent moving, up to a maximum of 30% increase. Taking damage or standing still will reduce this effect.
How to play it
- Same opener as every Hunter: Hunter's Mark, send the pet, Serpent Sting, Aimed Shot on cooldown, Auto Shot the rest (Icy Veins).
- Icy Veins' own Marksmanship advice: never take Lone Wolf while leveling (the pet is your tank and your threat), unless the goal is dungeon AoE.
- Keep Aspect of the Hawk up in combat for Deadly Aspects and Aspect of the Cheetah for travel, never under attack.
- Beast Mastery levels slightly faster (Icy Veins). Marksmanship pays you back in dungeons: Multi-Shot and Explosive Trap AoE.
- Use Mend Pet and Serpent Sting as mana efficient filler; with no mana, Auto Shot plus pet is still strong.
- At 60, respec to the PvE build: move the Focused Fire points and one Hawk Eye rank into Lone Wolf and Sniper Shot.
Verdict
Marksmanship is the Classic Hunter with a few new toys. Icy Veins calls it "relatively unchanged" apart from Aimed Shot becoming baseline at 20 and traps working in combat, and highlights two additions: Lone Wolf (+20% damage with all attacks while you have no active pet, at 11 points) and the 31-point Sniper Shot (4-sec cast, 15-sec cooldown, hits harder than Aimed Shot, +10 yards on the next 3 Shots). Icy Veins also states that Marksmanship's AoE is the highest of any Hunter spec, because Lone Wolf and Barrage feed Multi-Shot.
The sleeper is Careful Aim: 5/5 gives Attack Power equal to 100% of your Intellect (melee and ranged), so Intellect becomes a real damage stat. Add Lethal Attacks (+5% crit on all attacks), Mortal Shots (+30% ranged crit damage), Barrage (+10% to Multi-Shot, Aimed Shot and Volley) and Ranged Weapon Specialization (+5%), and this is a crit-and-burst spec. We spend 5 points in Beast Mastery for Deadly Aspects, which Icy Veins calls the clear outlier talent for every Hunter.
Placement is contested: the wowforever.co roundup shows Marksmanship as A on MMOExp and Overgear but F on a player-posted Blizzard forum list dated Sep 16 (the day before beta opened, challenged inside the thread). We read that as a pre-beta outlier and keep Marksmanship in the A band, behind Beast Mastery for leveling (Icy Veins: BM is slightly better) and ahead of it for AoE.
All level-60 content is projection. The beta cap is 30, so Mortal Shots, Barrage, Ranged Weapon Specialization and Sniper Shot have not been tested live.
Strengths
- Highest AoE of any Hunter spec (Icy Veins): Lone Wolf, Barrage and Multi-Shot, plus Explosive Trap in combat.
- Burst: Rapid Killing cuts Rapid Fire's cooldown by up to 2 min and Sniper Shot adds a 4-sec nuke with longer range.
- Lone Wolf removes the pet from the equation: +20% damage and no pet pulling extra packs in dungeons.
- Careful Aim turns Intellect into Attack Power (up to 100%), widening the stat budget.
- Scatter Shot and Improved Concussive Shot (20% stun chance) give Marksmanship the Hunter's best PvP control tools.
Weaknesses
- Needs to stand still for Auto Shot and is helpless in the 8-yard dead zone (Blizzard, Icy Veins).
- Sniper Shot's 4-sec cast may be a DPS loss in PvE, so it is only worth a point as a capstone (Icy Veins).
- Slower leveler than Beast Mastery (Icy Veins): Mortal Shots and Sniper Shot only arrive past point 31.
- Lone Wolf throws away the pet's utility (Mend Pet, family abilities) and any pet-buff plan.
- Mana-hungry shots: Efficiency and Rapid Recuperation exist to patch mana, which costs 7 points.
