How to play it
- Keep Aspect of the Hawk up in combat: Deadly Aspects (10% per Auto Shot at 5/5 for +30% ranged attack speed, 12 sec) is the biggest passive DPS source in the build.
- Hunter's Mark and Serpent Sting on the target, pet on auto-cast, Bestial Wrath (+50% pet damage, 18 sec) and Rapid Fire together; Rapid Killing cuts Rapid Fire's cooldown by up to 2 min and rewards finishing targets under Serpent Sting.
- Keep both Hawks up (Summon Hawk shares Arcane Shot's cooldown); fill with Aimed Shot or Multi-Shot, which now share one cooldown, and Arcane Shot when mana is high (Icy Veins).
- Explosive Trap is on-demand AoE in combat on a 30 sec cooldown; Freezing and Frost Trap are your crowd control for pulls.
- Mind pet aggro: Disengage (threat reduction doubled) if you pull threat, and never let the pet chain-pull in 5-man dungeons (Icy Veins).
- Pick the pet by family ability: Bear Swipe (3-target cleave), Scorpid Poison (stacking DoT), not the wolf's Furious Howl, which lost 40% Attack Power on Sep 24.
Verdict
Beast Mastery is the Hunter you can recommend to anyone. Icy Veins calls Hunter the strongest leveling class in the game and Beast Mastery the spec that doubles down on it: the pet holds threat and deals most of the damage, you shoot from range, Feign Death resets any bad pull. Pets now inherit stats from your gear (Blizzard, Icy Veins), so the build keeps scaling at level 60 instead of capping out with the pet's base stats.
The Forever talents are what make the 31-point core worth it. Summon Hawk (16 points, level 25) drops two 18-second Hawks on your target and shares Arcane Shot's cooldown; Deadly Aspects gives Auto Shot a 10% chance at 5/5 to grant +30% ranged attack speed for 12 sec under Aspect of the Hawk (Icy Veins: one of the best 5-point talents in the class); Bestial Wrath adds +50% pet damage for 18 sec; Ferocity into Frenzy keeps the pet at +30% attack speed after every crit. We spend the other 20 points in Marksmanship (Lethal Attacks, Careful Aim, Improved Stings, Efficiency, Rapid Killing) rather than Survival, because personal crit and Intellect-to-Attack-Power scale with the same gear the pet inherits.
Public rankings back the pick as a safe one: the wowforever.co roundup shows Beast Mastery in the second band (A) on every spec-level list that ranks it (MMOExp, the player-posted Blizzard forum list, Overgear), where Marksmanship and Survival both show wide spreads. Icy Veins puts it as "still a strong choice" in dungeons with Explosive Trap and Multi-Shot for AoE.
Everything at level 60 is a projection: the beta cap is 30, so the 31-point Bestial Wrath and every Marksmanship point past the 21st are untested. Treat the PvP and PvE builds as theory and the first ~16 leveling points as the supported part.
Strengths
- Strongest leveling Hunter (Icy Veins): the pet tanks and kills, Auto Shot plus pet is competitive even at zero mana, and Feign Death is the best reset button in the game.
- Owns the Hunter's only stun: Intimidation stuns for 3 sec on the pet's next attack and gives that attack +100% crit. Blizzard states Hunters otherwise cannot Stun or Interrupt.
- Scales with gear: pets inherit Hunter stats, and Unleashed Fury, Ferocity, Frenzy, Focused Fire and Bestial Wrath all multiply pet output.
- Low execution floor: baseline Aimed Shot at 20, Auto Shot that abilities no longer clip, and traps usable in combat (30 sec cooldown).
- Two on-demand Hawks (Summon Hawk) are a new ranged-independent damage source that pet control can't get wrong.
Weaknesses
- Pet management is a liability in dungeons: Icy Veins warns an irresponsible Hunter pulling extra targets quickly becomes a liability, and pets are the first thing AoE kills in PvP.
- The dead zone: ranged abilities are unusable within 8 yards of the enemy (Blizzard).
- Summon Hawk shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot and only two Hawks can be active, so it is a rotational button, not a free cooldown.
- The Sep-24 build cut the wolf's Furious Howl Attack Power bonus by 40%, so pick pets for their family ability (Bear Swipe, Scorpid Poison), not for the group buff.
- Icy Veins notes Hunters have historically out-scaled in late raiding and benefit least from world buffs; that risk is not testable before the Dec 9 raids.
