Icy Veins' Feral order for beta. Weapon DPS sets your form's auto-attack damage and ability damage, so a better weapon is the best upgrade. Hit and Expertise are rare below the late levels.

Best race

Night Elf
Alliance
Night Elf
Runner-up: Skyborne (High Order)

Quickness gives +2% movement speed and +1% dodge, Shadowmeld works in form, and Elune's Light helps with hard pulls.

  • Shadowmeld
  • Quickness
  • Wisp Spirit
  • Elune's Light
Tauren
Horde
Tauren
Runner-up: Skyborne (Windshaper)

Plainsrunning builds to +30% run speed and Icy Veins says Tauren 'stands out on lower levels' with extra Health and 1% hit.

  • War Stomp
  • Endurance
  • Cultivation
  • Plainsrunning

How to play it

  • Before 10 you use Wrath and Moonfire; at level 10 take the Bear Form quest and level mostly as a bear, healing yourself with Mana between pulls (Icy Veins).
  • Cat Form unlocks via a quest at level 20 and lets you Prowl; use Cat as your travel and sneaking form with Feral Swiftness.
  • Levels 10-14: Ferocity cuts the cost of Maul, Primal Bite, Swipe, Claw and Rake by up to 5 Rage or Energy.
  • Brutal Impact (levels 15-16) shortens the Bash cooldown by 30 sec; Feral Charge arrives at 20 as the 11-point talent.
  • Level 25 gives Primal Bite as soon as the row 4 gate opens; Lacerate is a trainer spell at 42, right as Natural Reaction fills in.
  • Consumables work in form, so keep Healing and Rage Potions on your bar.

Verdict

Feral Combat is a 51-point tree in a game that gives you 51 points, so you can take every single talent. That makes the build question about which role you play, not which talents you skip. Icy Veins calls Feral the only specialization in Forever whose talents buff both tanking and DPS: Ferocity trims Rage and Energy costs in both forms, Predatory Strikes adds Attack Power in Cat, Bear and Dire Bear, and Sharpened Claws, Savage Fury and Predatory Instincts all apply across forms.

For level-60 dungeons and the Dec 9 raids I pick Bear Form tank, not Cat DPS. Blizzard's deep dive gave the bear most of the new toys: Lacerate (a 15-sec stacking bleed at level 42), Primal Bite (a 20-Rage, very-high-threat strike), Thick Hide that turns Defense skill into armor, Natural Reaction for dodge and Rage, Frenzied Regeneration for 100% of max health, a Growl on Warrior-Taunt cooldown, and Berserk. Cat got a buffed Claw, Shred and Rake and little else; Icy Veins notes it plays 'very similar' to Classic, and every list that ranks Feral as DPS puts it in the third band (MMOExp, Overgear, the Blizzard-forum thread). Tanks are the scarcer role.

The risk is real. Icy Veins flags that druid is the one tank with no easy way to strip crits and Crushing Blows, which could hurt in harder content, and nothing above level 30 is playable on the beta yet. The client talent file also lags the dev notes: Blizzard says Shifting Power, Improved Shifting Power and a Shredding Attacks row move are 'new to next week's build', so the Cat side of the tree may change as soon as the next beta patch.

Strengths

  • Talents pay out in both forms: Ferocity, Predatory Strikes, Sharpened Claws and Savage Fury all work in Cat and Bear (Blizzard / Icy Veins).
  • Among the fastest specs: Feral Swiftness gives +30% Cat Form speed, shapeshifting breaks roots and slows, and Feral Charge has a Cat version on a 30-sec cooldown (Icy Veins / Blizzard).
  • Bear toolkit is now deep: Lacerate, Primal Bite, Frenzied Regeneration for 100% of max health, Growl on Taunt cooldown, Enrage with 10 starting Rage.
  • Leader of the Pack gives +3% crit to the party and works in Cat, Bear and Dire Bear Forms; all potions, weapon enchants, Windfury and racials now work while shapeshifted.

Weaknesses

  • Utility is thin: Entangling Roots is the only crowd control and it does little against casters (Icy Veins), and druids cannot snare, silence or interrupt (Blizzard).
  • Icy Veins flags druid as the only tank with no easy way to remove critical strikes and Crushing Blows, which may bite in raids.
  • Cat has few new tools beyond a buffed Claw and Shred, and Shifting Power is not in the build we vendored.
  • Slow early game: Bear Form unlocks at level 10 and Cat Form at 20, and every DPS-spec listing we found puts Feral in the third band.
